Urgent care costs $150 to $250 per visit without insurance. An emergency room visit for the same problem costs $1,500 to $3,000. That’s roughly a tenfold difference for the same sprained ankle.
Plenty of ER visits aren’t emergencies. Sprains, minor cuts, fevers, and infections get the same treatment at an urgent care clinic for $150 to $250 instead of $1,500 or more.

Urgent care clinics usually price in tiers. A basic illness visit (cold, flu, ear infection, UTI) lands around $100 to $175. Add an X-ray, EKG, or lab work and you’re at $175 to $250. Stitches, IV fluids, or laceration repair push it to $250 to $400 or more. Still a fraction of the ER.
Go to urgent care for
Sprains and minor fractures, cuts that need stitches, fevers, flu, ear infections, UTIs, rashes, minor burns, and anything where you need same-day care but your life isn’t in danger. Retail clinics (like CVS MinuteClinic, $99 to $139) handle the simplest end of this, and telehealth visits run $30 to $75 for problems no one needs to touch.
Go to the ER for
Chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of stroke, severe bleeding, head injuries, broken bones poking through skin, severe burns, and anything where waiting could cause permanent harm. Federal law requires the ER to stabilize you whether or not you can pay. Never gamble with these to save money.
How to pay less at urgent care
Ask for the self-pay price before you register. Many clinics offer cash discounts they don’t advertise. Independent urgent care centers are often cheaper than hospital-affiliated ones for the same care. Ask about a prompt-pay discount if you’re paying the full bill yourself. And for straightforward issues, check telehealth first; it’s the cheapest tier of all.

The rule is simple: if it might kill or maim you, go to the ER. For everything else, urgent care does the same job at a tenth of the price.
