What a child rider is

A child rider is an add-on to your own term or whole life policy that provides a small death benefit, usually $10,000 to $25,000, for each of your children. It costs a flat amount, often in the neighborhood of $5 to $10 a month, that covers all your eligible children at once rather than pricing per child. Children born or adopted after you buy the policy are typically covered automatically.

The benefit is meant to cover final expenses and give the family breathing room, not to replace income. Some riders also include a conversion privilege: the child can convert the rider into their own permanent policy as a young adult without proving insurability.

When it is worth adding

The honest case for a child rider is narrow. It makes sense if you want a small cushion for worst-case final expenses and you like the conversion option as a gift of future insurability to your child. At a few dollars a month, it is cheap.

It is not worth it as an investment or as meaningful protection. Children do not have income to replace, and the dollars are usually better spent on your own coverage or an emergency fund. If someone is selling you a large standalone child policy as a savings vehicle, that is a different product with different math, and you should price it separately.

What to check in the fine print

Look at the age limits: most riders cover children only to age 18 or 25, and the conversion window has a deadline. Check whether the rider pays the full face amount or a graded benefit in the first years. And confirm the flat price covers all children, since that is the feature that makes the rider cheap for larger families.
