Sources: U.S. News (USAA $1,542/year full coverage), NerdWallet April 2026 (GEICO liability $41/month), MoneyGeek 2026 (Travelers full coverage $97/month), Savvy Insurance Solutions via Yahoo Finance (American Family and Farm Bureau $151/month), Clearsurance (Erie from $35/month). Different analyses use different driver profiles, so the exact dollars move around, but the ordering is consistent.

USAA: cheapest overall, if you qualify

USAA has the lowest rates of any insurer analyzed in 2026, at about $1,542 a year for full coverage according to U.S. News. The catch is eligibility: military members, veterans, and their immediate families only. If you qualify, start here. Nothing else in the national market consistently beats it.

GEICO: cheapest for liability-only

GEICO is the go-to for drivers who want the cheapest state-minimum or liability-only coverage, at about $41 a month per NerdWallet’s 2026 data. Its full-coverage rates are competitive too, around $98 a month in MoneyGeek’s analysis, and it is available in nearly every state. Military, federal employee, and low-mileage discounts stack on top.

Travelers: cheapest full coverage among big national insurers

MoneyGeek’s 2026 analysis puts Travelers’ full coverage at about $97 a month, roughly 29 percent below the national average. NerdWallet’s numbers run higher at $139, which shows how much the driver profile matters, but Travelers lands near the top of both lists for drivers who want broad coverage cheap.

The regional players worth checking

Erie advertises rates from $35 a month, the lowest headline number anywhere, but it only operates in about a dozen states, mostly in the East and Midwest. American Family is strongest in the Midwest at around $151 a month for full coverage. If you live in their footprint, get a quote. If you do not, they are irrelevant to you, which is the whole point of checking regional carriers.

Why “cheapest” lists disagree with each other

No ranking survives contact with your zip code. Insurers price by state, and a company that is cheapest nationally can be mid-pack where you live. Age, driving record, credit-based insurance score (where states allow it), mileage, and the car itself all move the quote. Use the rankings above as a shortlist, then get actual quotes from at least three of them with identical coverage limits.
