What Does AAA Travel Insurance Cover?

AAA travel insurance is Allianz coverage sold by AAA clubs: cancellation, interruption, emergency medical, evacuation and baggage. See the benefit limits, the medical cap to watch, what is excluded, and how the per trip price works.

On this page

AAA travel insurance covers trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical care, emergency medical transportation, lost or delayed baggage, travel delay, and 24/7 travel assistance. AAA does not underwrite it. AAA clubs sell Allianz Travel Insurance plans from Allianz Global Assistance, now Allianz Partners, so the coverage, limits and claims process are Allianz’s, with your AAA travel advisor helping you pick the plan.

Key points before you buy:

  • The provider behind the AAA name is Allianz Partners, one of the largest travel insurers in the US.
  • Cancellation pays up to 100% of insured prepaid trip cost for a covered reason, and interruption pays up to 150% on mid and upper tiers, according to Allianz plan documents.
  • Emergency medical limits are the weak spot. Reported OneTrip limits are $10,000 on Basic, $50,000 on Prime and $75,000 on Premier.
  • Kids 17 and under are covered free on most AAA TripAssist plans when traveling with a covered parent or grandparent, according to AAA.

What does AAA travel insurance cover, benefit by benefit?

AAA travel insurance covers the standard Allianz benefit set: cancellation up to 100% of insured trip cost, interruption up to 150%, emergency medical and dental, emergency transportation, baggage loss and delay, travel delay, missed connections on some tiers, and 24/7 assistance. The exact dollar limits change by plan tier and by state, so read your plan certificate, not the brochure summary.

Benefit What it pays Typical limit to check
Trip cancellation Refunds prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs if you cancel for a covered reason such as illness or a family death Up to 100% of insured trip cost
Trip interruption Refunds the unused part of the trip plus extra transport home Up to 150% of insured trip cost on Prime and Premier
Emergency medical and dental Pays for covered emergency care during the trip $10,000 Basic, $50,000 Prime, $75,000 Premier (reported)
Emergency medical transportation Pays to move you to suitable care or home Up to $500,000 on OneTrip Prime, according to Allianz
Baggage loss and delay Pays for lost, stolen or damaged bags, and essentials during a covered delay Set dollar caps per plan; some AAA plans offer a no receipts fixed payment option
Travel delay Pays meals and lodging during a covered delay Daily cap after a minimum delay, often 5 or 6 hours
Missed port of call Fixed payment when a cruise skips a scheduled port $100 per missed port, up to $300, on most AAA plans, according to AAA Northeast

One AAA member story shows why the transportation benefit matters. AAA Club Alliance describes a member whose medical evacuation from Hungary would have cost upwards of $50,000 out of pocket. Her policy covered the evacuation, up to $1 million on her plan, plus cancellation, interruption and medical benefits. Evacuation is the benefit most likely to produce a five or six figure bill, and it is the one your health plan at home almost never covers abroad.

What is AAA TripAssist and AAA travel health insurance?

TripAssist is the name many AAA clubs use for the Allianz plans they sell. AAA travel health insurance is the emergency medical and dental part of those same plans, not a separate health policy. It pays for covered emergency care on the trip and for medical transport, and it stops when the trip ends. It does not replace your regular health insurance at home.

Plan names vary by club and state. Some clubs sell the national OneTrip range (Basic, Prime, Premier, plus annual plans). Others sell club branded tiers such as TripProtect. The benefits rhyme even when the names differ: cancellation and interruption at the core, medical and evacuation on top, baggage and delay around the edges. Ask your advisor for the certificate of insurance and compare the medical limit and the covered reasons list, because those two pages decide what a claim pays.

What does AAA travel insurance not cover?

AAA travel insurance does not cover a cancellation for a reason that is not on the plan’s covered reasons list, a pre-existing condition bought outside the early purchase window, or routine medical care abroad. It also excludes things like traveling against medical advice, extreme sports on lower tiers, and losses from a named storm once the storm is named. Fear of travel by itself pays nothing.

Three gaps catch buyers out:

  • Cancel for any reason is an upgrade, not a standard benefit. Allianz calls its version Cancel Anytime on Prime and Premier. It costs extra and refunds 80% of prepaid trip cost, according to plan reviews, and you still have to buy it early.
  • Medical limits are low for the price. A $50,000 medical cap can disappear in a few days of hospital care overseas. If medical cover is your main worry, compare against the plans in our best international travel insurance guide before you buy.
  • Covered reasons are a closed list. Work changes, a pet emergency or a falling out with a travel companion pay only if your specific tier lists them. Newer AAA tiers have added reasons such as mandatory evacuations and emergency veterinary care, according to AAA Northeast, which is one more reason to read your own certificate.

How much does AAA travel insurance cost?

AAA travel insurance cost is quoted per trip and rises with trip cost, traveler age and plan tier. There is no single published rate, and any site quoting you one fixed price for all trips is guessing. Budget a single digit percentage of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip cost for a comprehensive plan, then get the real quote from AAA or Allianz before your first nonrefundable payment is more than 14 days old.

Two things move the price most. The first is insured trip cost: insuring a $6,000 cruise costs roughly twice insuring a $3,000 one. The second is age, because medical risk is priced in. Our travel insurance costs guide breaks down what drives premiums across providers. For frequent travelers, price an annual plan instead. Our annual travel insurance plans for seniors comparison shows when the annual math wins, and our Allianz travel insurance reviews post covers the same underlying plans in review form, including what customers report about claims.

Is AAA travel insurance worth it?

AAA travel insurance is worth it when you have nonrefundable trip costs you cannot afford to lose, you are traveling abroad where your health plan thins out, or you want a local advisor to help with the claim. It is weaker value when medical cover is your top priority, because the medical limits on the common tiers sit below what specialist travel medical plans offer at similar prices.

Buy it early if you buy it at all. The pre-existing condition waiver and the cancel anytime upgrade both depend on buying within about 14 days of your first trip payment. If you are comparing AAA against buying Allianz direct, the policy is the same. The AAA route adds the advisor, club specific benefits like the missed port payment, and free cover for kids 17 and under on most plans. The direct route adds nothing except skipping the club. Price both, compare the medical limit first, and keep the certificate with your travel documents.

Frequently asked questions

Is AAA travel insurance the same as Allianz travel insurance?

Yes, in practice. AAA clubs sell Allianz Travel Insurance plans, and Allianz Global Assistance (now Allianz Partners) administers them, handles claims and runs the 24/7 assistance line. Your AAA agent sells the plan and can help you choose it, while the policy itself is an Allianz contract with Allianz benefit limits and covered reasons.

How much does AAA travel insurance cost?

Price depends on your trip cost, your age, the travelers covered and the plan tier, so AAA quotes it per trip rather than publishing one rate. As a planning guide, comprehensive single trip plans from large providers commonly run a single digit percentage of the prepaid trip cost. Get the quote before you pay nonrefundable balances, because buying early unlocks time sensitive benefits.

Does AAA travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?

It can. On Allianz OneTrip Prime, existing medical conditions can be covered at no extra cost if you insure the full trip cost within 14 days of your first trip payment and you are medically able to travel when you buy, according to Allianz. Buy late and that waiver is usually gone, so the purchase date matters as much as the plan.

Does AAA travel insurance cover international trips?

Yes. AAA travel insurance international coverage is a core use of these plans, and it matters because most US health plans pay little or nothing abroad. Check the emergency medical limit on the tier you pick. Reported OneTrip limits run from $10,000 on Basic to $50,000 on Prime and $75,000 on Premier, which is thin for a serious hospital stay overseas.

Can I buy AAA travel insurance if I am not a AAA member?

Allianz sells its OneTrip plans direct to the public, and AAA clubs focus their travel insurance sales on members and AAA booked trips. If you are not a member, you can still buy the same underlying Allianz plan direct. Members get the added value of a local AAA travel advisor, club specific plans in some regions, and member only benefits on certain tiers.
