When an adult child moves back home, or never left, car insurance gets awkward. Insurers care about everyone of driving age in the household because any of them might drive the cars kept there. Leaving a resident adult child off the policy to save money can lead to a denied claim if they crash a household car.
The usual insurer rules
Most insurers require you to list all licensed household members, or formally exclude those they allow you to exclude. Excluding a driver means the policy will not pay if that person drives the car, even in an emergency, and some states and lenders restrict exclusions. An adult child with their own car and their own policy at the same address is treated differently by many insurers, though you should still disclose the arrangement.
Whose policy costs less
Adding a young adult to a parent’s established policy is often cheaper than a standalone policy in their own name, because the parent’s longer insurance history, multi car discounts, and bundling can soften the price. A standalone policy can still win when the adult child’s record is poor, since a bad record on the parent’s policy raises the price of every car listed on it. Run the numbers both ways with identical limits before deciding. Our comparison of adding a young driver to a parent policy vs their own policy walks through the same trade off for teenagers, and the logic carries over.
Title, registration, and address
Whose name is on the car’s title matters. Insurers generally want the policy in the name of the car’s owner, and a car titled to the adult child usually needs a policy in their name even if a parent pays the bill. Keep registration, garaging address, and policy address consistent. If the adult child lives elsewhere for work or study most of the year, tell the insurer, because garaging the car at a different address changes the rating.
Making the arrangement cheaper
Ask about good driver and distant student style discounts where they apply, telematics programs that price from actual driving, and higher deductibles on older cars. Our guide to telematics car insurance explains how usage based pricing works. Review the household listing at every renewal. Adult children move out, records improve with time, and a structure that made sense last year may be costing you money now.
