Standard trip cancellation pays when you cancel for a listed reason: illness, injury, a death in the family, certain weather events. Cancel For Any Reason, usually shortened to CFAR, is an optional add-on that covers the reasons that are not listed.
What CFAR pays, and what it does not
CFAR typically refunds a portion of your prepaid, nonrefundable costs, not the full amount. Many plans set that share in the policy terms, and you must cancel at least a set number of days before departure. It is partial protection bought for flexibility, and it should be priced that way in your head.
Compare it with the base benefit first. Our guide to trip cancellation insurance explains what standard cancellation already covers, which is more than many travelers realize.
The deadlines matter
CFAR usually has to be bought soon after your first trip payment, often within a window the insurer sets, and you must insure the full cost of the trip. Miss the window and the add-on is gone, even if the base policy is still available. Put the deadline on your calendar the day you book.
What it costs
Adding CFAR raises the premium over the base plan, sometimes by a lot. The price depends on trip cost, traveler age, and destination, the same factors covered in what drives travel insurance premiums. Get the quote both ways. If the upgrade costs more than the flexibility is worth to you, the base plan may be enough.
If you do cancel, keep every receipt and the written cancellation confirmation from each supplier. how to file a travel insurance claim walks through the documentation insurers ask for, and CFAR claims are no different.
